About Us

Malfunction Films, based in San Diego, California, is dedicated to creating movies that put character and story first, for an audience that appreciates subtlety instead of "in your face" camera moves, special effects and movie poster catchphrases.

One goal of Malfunction Films is to offer a way for talented but untried artists and crew to get a start in the film industry. We hope to do this by providing them an opportunity to work without the constraints of molding their efforts based on the results of focus groups and marketing departments.

We have a passion for making films, and we hope to be able to share it with you.

People

David Barak

Dave is the founder of Malfunction Films. As such, he serves as a writer, director and producer. He has worked as a newspaper photographer, writer, editor and illustrator, and he served four years in the US Navy as a sensor operator onboard S3 Viking aircraft. He is also a volunteer docent at the USS Midway San Diego Aircraft Carrier Museum in San Diego.

History

Malfunction Films traces its history back to CHIMP Studio, a web design firm started in Columbus, Ohio. Multimedia projects were eventually taken on, and that led to producing video content for web and multimedia use.

Over time, video and film work overtook everything else CHIMP Studio was doing, so the decision was made to concentrate on that, and Big Shot Films was born.

After relocating to San Diego, California, Big Shot Films was renamed Malfunction Films and the primary focus became the development of fiction and documentary films.
